Primary 2

Head of Department: Nicki Kemp

Located at Waverley main site, Primary 2 has 3 classes: Rose, Sunflower and Buttercup

 What do we offer?

  • Primary 2 provides full-time education for children in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.
  • Our dedicated staff are fully committed to supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), ensuring a safe and nurturing learning environment.
  • High levels of staffing ensure student safety and wellbeing.
  • Our team’s expertise enables us to tailor learning experiences that build on each child's individual skills, supporting their ongoing educational development.

We offer a caring and stimulating environment where pupils can continue to explore, learn and develop skills across all the areas of the curriculum. We have three classes with a high staff-to-pupil ratios to ensure personalised support for each student.

We promote independence in all pupils, encouraging them to develop their physical abilities and life skills. Our goal is that by the time students leave Primary 2, they will have grown into confident individuals with a keen desire to learn new skills and apply them in the wider world.

Curriculum Approach

We follow the Waverley curriculum which is a topic-based framework divided into different areas of learning across three levels, carefully adapted to meet the unique needs of our pupils. Level 1, Level 2, Level 3

Class Highlights

In Rose Class we are dedicated to developing independent physical skills that help students access their environment and learning opportunities. Our pupils are motivated to become more confident in walking, standing, and transitioning skills Our school physiotherapists and teachers work closely together to incorporate these skills into every session. Our students enjoy their swimming and hydrotherapy sessions which enhance their motor skills and confidence around water.

We follow the Waverley curriculum, providing sensory based learning while also focusing on each student's individual goals. Additionally, we are committed to enhancing communication skills so that students can make choices and express their needs and feelings. This includes using early AAC tools such as Yes/No symbols, PODD books, single-message voice output devices, eye gaze devices and Makaton. Together we explore, investigate, and enjoy engaging in various activities and sessions, making learning fun and meaningful.

Sunflower class is a very active and full of energy! We enjoy developing our physical abilities through swimming, P.E., soft play, playground activities, bike riding, and exploring our community. We are also highly focused and motivated to learn. We've built some wonderful friendships along the way and are given many oportunities to develop our social interaction skills. Reading and literacy are special to us, helping us improve our reading and writing skills which we apply to the world around us. We take great pleasure in enhancing our maths skills and learning about the world through science and social studies lessons. We are very skilled at signing and using our PODD books and AAC devices to communicate with teachers, peers, and others. Additionally, we are working hard to become as independent as possible during the school day, and our teachers are dedicated to helping us transfer these skills to our home environments.

Buttercup class bring energy and enthusiasm to everything they do! We thoroughly enjoy encouraging their curiosity by exploring the environment through a wide range of engaging activities. These include interactive storytelling with props, experimenting with mark-making using various materials, and creating vibrant artwork, all designed to stimulate their senses and foster creativity.

A key focus of our program is developing each child's communication skills. We are dedicated to helping them express their needs, feelings, and choices confidently. To achieve this, we model a variety of communication methods such as PODD, visual supports, and Makaton. These tools empower our pupils to develop their 'voice' and participate more fully in their learning. Our students enjoy swimming sessions. This coupled with our PE sessions focusses on strengthening their muscles, improving coordination, and promoting overall physical well-being. Our shared love for being active means that our children are encouraged to participate as much as possible, fostering not only physical development but also joy and a sense of achievement in their everyday experiences.

The department fosters an environment filled with enthusiasm, excitement, and fun, creating an ideal setting for students to develop and enhance their skills. It promotes a lively and engaging atmosphere where creativity thrives, collaboration is encouraged, and students feel motivated to explore their potential fully. This vibrant and energetic environment not only supports academic growth but also inspires students to pursue their passions with confidence and joy.
