Facilities

At Waverley, we believe that children learn best when they are happy and enjoying themselves.  Our school (main site) was purpose-built for our students in 1990. Our premises officer and his team ensure the school continues to be well maintained and cared for. Our learning spaces are bright and vibrant.  The students are able to maintain a level of independence, due to the visual and auditory cues placed around the school along with the handrails for students learning to walk and the tracking system for our track-seeking wheelchair base, called a drivedeck.

Swimming pool

Our spacious and accessible swimming facilities, including a main swimming pool, a smaller training pool and a hydrotherapy pool are frequently utilised by our students as well as other mainstream schools across the borough and private swim schools. The main pool and the hydro pool both have overhead hoists which can be used. Each of the three pools have access to changing rooms which feature showers, overhead hoists, changing beds as well as benches and hooks for items of clothing.

Sand and Water

We have a dedicated sand and water room which allows our primary-aged children to explore the unique qualities of sand and water. This space is especially beneficial for students who have never swum before and may find the swimming pool overwhealming. Equipt with changing facilities, children can easily change into their swimwear and fully enjoy the fun and learning experiences offered by the sand and water activities.

IT suite

Our IT suite uses touch screen computers and accessible keyboards and mice. We have a range of specialist software to engage the students. In addition, every class has a smart board and some classes have a range of switch-activated toys. There is a plentiful presence of ICT throughout the school, with most students possessing their own communication devices, many of which are high tech (eye gaze, personalised ipads etc).

Soft play and sensory gym

Our large soft playroom gives the students the opportunity to try new skills in a safe environment. The students enjoy the interactive elements in the room too. The sensory gym is particularly effective for those children with sensory processing needs, particularly vestibular and proprioceptive senses.

Sensory gardens

We have two sensory gardens which the students can explore. All the plants in school have been chosen to ensure they will not harm the students if eaten. We also have a memory garden as you enter the school building which allows students and staff to reflect and remember, surrounding by plants, water and wildlife.

Playgrounds

Our three playgrounds are well used by the students. We encourage outdoor play all year round. Each playground offers something different i.e. space for our adapted bicycles, adapted swings, sucken trampolines, a wheelchair roundabout, climbing frames, reading nook and an astroturf.

Sensory room

Our sensory room provides a specifically designed environment that supports the children's unique sensory and developmental needs. It  is used by a small group of students to experience a variety of stimuli such as visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory elements to help them process and integrate sensory information more effectively. Engaging with the sensory equipment can enhance motor skills, hand-eye coordination and cognitive development.

Library

Our library prides our student s with access to a wide range of books and materials to support thier learning, to allow them to research and to support their personal development. Students can access the library during breaktimes and lunchtimes and teachers use this space for small group reading sessions. Our library allows our students to cultivate curiosity and a love of reading.

Art room

This room enables freedom of expression through the medium of art. Our Art Technician is highly skilled and supports the teachers to deliver exciting and fun filled art lessons while developing the students creativity and skills in a myriad of ways.
